Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

Difficulty varies by family and fitness. Treks range from 30 minutes to 4+ hours each way over steep, uneven terrain at altitude (2,500-4,000m). Your fitness level will be assessed at briefing, and you’ll be assigned an appropriate family. Porters are available to assist ($10-15).

What is the age limit for gorilla trekking?

Minimum age is 15 years. No exceptions – this protects both gorillas and young visitors.

Can I take photos with the gorillas?

Yes, photography is encouraged – without flash. A camera with a good zoom lens (70-200mm or similar) is ideal. Your guide will help position you for optimal shots.

What should I wear for gorilla trekking?

Layer clothing: moisture-wicking base, insulating mid-layer, waterproof outer. Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots, gaiters, and garden gloves are essential. See our detailed packing list above.

Are there ATMs in Volcanoes National Park?

No. Bring sufficient cash (USD or RWF) for tips, souvenirs, and any incidentals. Major lodges accept credit cards.

Can I do two gorilla treks?

Absolutely! Many visitors book two treks for different perspectives (different families, different terrains). A second trek day is highly recommended.

What happens if I don’t see gorillas?

Sightings are virtually guaranteed (trackers locate families before you depart). If a family crosses into Congo (rare), alternative arrangements are made. Your permit is non-refundable but we work with Rwanda Development Board on any contingencies.

Is Rwanda safe for solo female travelers?

Yes. Rwanda is exceptionally safe, and solo female travelers frequently visit. Our guides provide professional support, and lodges are secure. Many solo travelers join group departures.

Can I combine Rwanda with Uganda or Kenya?

Easily! The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers all three countries. Fly between Kigali, Entebbe, and Nairobi with multiple daily flights.

What’s the food like in Rwanda?

Luxury lodges offer international cuisine with Rwandan influences. Expect fresh produce, excellent meats, and creative dishes. Kigali has outstanding restaurants (Heaven, Meza Malonga, Repub Lounge).
