Detailed Itinerary:
Day 1 – Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch
The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived: this is when your Ugandan safari begins. After a few brief formalities and an introduction to your guide, we’ll start this journey together and begin discovering all the amazing animals Uganda has to offer.
The flagship for a rhino reintroduction project organized by Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is perfectly positioned for a stopover between Kampala and northern Uganda. More than 40 white rhinos now roam freely within the 7,000ha sanctuary, which is also home to other large mammals such as waterbuck, bushbuck and warthog.
When you stay at Gipir and Labongo Safari Lodge, you’re in a good location to enjoy this leg of your trip.

Day 2 – Murchison Falls National Park
Named after an explosive 43m-high waterfall created where the Nile erupts through a crack in the Rift Valley escarpment, Murchison Falls National Park is also one of East Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations. Here, you’ll find golden-maned lions stalking the plains, large herds of Rothschild’s giraffe striding through palm-studded grassland, and hippos basking in the river shallows while elephants and buffalo come to drink. A highlight of the park’s prolific aquatic birdlife is the swamp-dwelling shoebill, regularly seen around the delta formed by the Nile as it flows into Lake Albert.
Put on some warm clothes and enjoy an early morning game drive. This is the perfect time to experience the wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit. The light is soft and warm – perfect for photography – and most animals are out and about, and active. If you’re not an early riser, you’ll definitely want to make an exception here.
Day 3 – Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
You’ll go on a guided walk in the community-managed Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary bordering Kibale National Park.
Here, you stand a good chance of spotting up to five monkey species. The forest birding is excellent, with a long list of colorful regulars that includes great blue turaco, papyrus gonolek, yellow-spotted barbet, and blue-throated roller.
We think you’ll enjoy the down-to-earth feel of Kibale Forest Lodge, which stands in the village of Bigodi, practically bordering Kibale National Park. Owned and managed by a local husband-and-wife team known for their expertise as bird guides, this welcoming place started life as a simple homestay, but it has gradually evolved into a proper lodge whose en-suite rooms now all have king-size beds, fitted nets, and private balconies.
Accommodation Kibale Forest Lodge
Day 4 – Kibale National Park
Kibale National Park is best known for its population of around 1,000 chimpanzees, man’s closest genetic relative.
The park is home to a dozen other primate species, including Uganda mangabey, a type of monkey that is unique to Uganda and difficult to see anywhere other than Kibale. It supports a dazzling forest birdlife, with 370 species recorded, ranging from the outrageously colorful great blue turaco to the secretive green-breasted pitta.
There is something about chimpanzees that makes them one of the greatest safari prizes of all. We’ll take you trekking through the forest to spend time with them and enjoy an encounter that you’ll never forget.
Going on an evening game drive is one of the highlights of any safari. This is when temperatures cool, the light becomes softer, and the wildlife begins to get active. Not only will you be out when the light is best for taking photos, but it’s also one of the best times of day for seeing the animals.

Evening Game Drive, Queen Elizabeth National Park
You’re perfectly placed when you stay at Tembo Safari Lodge on your visit to Kibale National Park.

Day 5 – Queen Elizabeth National Park
Time to get into safari mode as you enter Queen Elizabeth National Park, a savannah-dominated reserve known for its conspicuous populations of lion, elephant, buffalo and other iconic African creatures. There are also hippos on the pretty Kazinga Channel, a flat and narrow waterway that connects Lake Edward and Lake George within eyeshot of the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains, as well as rainforests alive with chimps and monkeys, and crater lakes tinged pink by flocks of flamingo. Indeed, this is possibly the most biodiverse national park anywhere in East Africa.
Imagine being out in the soft, early morning light, wrapped in a blanket, just as the animals emerge from their night’s rest or from the shadows of their nighttime adventures. The world feels fresh and new on an early morning game drive, the sun has yet to beat down upon the earth, and it may end up being your favorite time to be out on safari.

Day 6 – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Supporting almost half the world’s mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is arguably the best place anywhere in the world to track these charismatic, gentle giants through their misty forest home. But there is far more to this UNESCO World Heritage Site than just gorillas. The lush forest interior is also home to a diversity of other mammals, ranging from L’Hoest’s monkey and chimpanzee to elephant and the yellow-backed duiker. A total of 350 bird species, 23 of which are unique to the Albertine Rift Valley, ensure that Bwindi ranks among East Africa’s most rewarding bird-watching destinations.
Gorilla Bluff Lodge is your base for exploring Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with us, and you’ll really enjoy staying here.

Day 7 – Lake Bunyonyi
It’s time to chill out at Lake Bunyonyi, a flooded river valley that runs for 25km through the majestic hills characteristic of southwest Uganda. This lovely freshwater lake has something for everybody. There are no hippos or crocodiles, so it’s safe for swimming, but wildlife lovers will enjoy the plentiful birds and the high chance of spotting swimming otters. As for activities, you can relax over a beer at a waterside restaurant, hike in the surrounding hills, or take a boat out to some of the lake’s 29 islands.
There are few more iconic wildlife experiences than trekking in search of mountain gorillas. These soulful creatures and the remarkable landscape they inhabit are worth every second that you walk through the forest to find them.
Accommodation Heritage Lodge Habuharo
Day 8 – Lake Mburo National Park
Although it isn’t a classic Big Five destination (elephants and rhino are absent, and lion and leopard scarce), Lake Mburo National Park hosts a varied selection of African wildlife, including several iconic species not found elsewhere in western Uganda. The park’s acacia-swathed slopes and valleys are home to giraffe, zebra, buffalo, impala, waterbuck, bushbuck, and various other grazers and browsers. Hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds thrive in an extensive network of lakes and other wetlands.
You’ll love the warm light and cooler temperatures as we take you out to explore on your evening game drive. This time of day is when both predators and prey are most active and it can feel as though anything could happen at any moment. This is when you’ll most enjoy being on safari.
