Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe / Transfer to Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch

The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived — your Ugandan safari begins. After a few brief formalities and an introduction to your guide, you’ll start this journey together and begin to discover all of the amazing animals Uganda has to offer.

Drive north to Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch — the flagship for a rhino reintroduction project organised by Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. More than 40 white rhinos now roam freely within the 7,000-hectare sanctuary, which is also home to waterbuck, bushbuck, and warthog.

Rhino tracking is done entirely on foot with armed ranger guides and takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The sanctuary is also home to antelopes, monkeys, reptiles, and over 300 bird species.

What to expect: Slow, silent stalking of rhinos through open bushland — a powerful conservation success story and a rare chance to encounter one of Africa’s most iconic animals on foot.

Tip: Wear neutral colours and comfortable walking shoes; carry sunscreen and drinking water.

Accommodation:

  • Budget: Red Chilli Rest Camp (Murchison) / Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Guesthouse

  • Mid-range: Gipir and Labongo Safari Lodge / Amuka Lodge

  • Luxury: Chobe Safari Lodge (upgrade)

Day 2: Murchison Falls National Park — Game Drive & Nile Boat Cruise

Named after an explosive 43-metre-high waterfall created where the Nile erupts through a crack in the Rift Valley escarpment, Murchison Falls National Park is one of East Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations. Here you’ll find golden-maned lions stalking the plains, large herds of Rothschild’s giraffe striding through palm-studded grassland, and hippos basking in the river shallows while elephants and buffaloes come to drink. A highlight of the park’s prolific aquatic birdlife is the swamp-dwelling shoebill, regularly seen around the Nile Delta.

Put on some warm clothes and enjoy an early morning game drive. This is the perfect time to experience the wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit — the light is soft and warm, perfect for photography, and most animals are out and about, and active. If you’re not an early riser, you’ll definitely want to make an exception here.

In the afternoon, enjoy a 3-hour boat cruise upstream to the base of Murchison Falls ($38 per person), with close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. End the day with a short hike to the top of the falls for dramatic sunset views.

What to expect: Big landscapes, loud water, and excellent binocular use.

Tip: Keep sunglasses handy and a sense of wonder charged to 100%.

Accommodation:

  • Budget: Red Chilli Rest Camp / Fort Murchison (tented)

  • Mid-range: Pakuba Safari Lodge / Murchison River Lodge

  • Luxury: Paraa Safari Lodge / Nile Safari Lodge / Baker’s Lodge

Day 3 & 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park — Big Five Game Drives & Kazinga Channel Cruise

Time to get into safari mode as you enter Queen Elizabeth National Park, a savannah-dominated reserve known for its conspicuous populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, and other iconic African creatures. There are also hippos on the pretty Kazinga Channel — a flat, narrow waterway that connects Lake Edward and Lake George, within eyeshot of the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains, as well as rainforests alive with chimps and monkeys, and crater lakes tinged pink by flocks of flamingos. Indeed, this is possibly the most biodiverse national park anywhere in East Africa.

Imagine being out in the soft, early morning light, wrapped in a blanket, just as the animals emerge from their night’s rest or from the shadows of their nighttime adventures. The world feels fresh and new on an early morning game drive — the sun has yet to beat down upon the earth, and it may end up being your favourite time to be out on safari.

Day 3 activities:

  • Early morning game drive in Kasenyi plains — lions, elephants, buffaloes, and Uganda kobs

  • Afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel — one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa, plus crocodiles, elephants, and abundant birdlife ($30 per person)

Day 4 activities:

  • Morning game drive in the Ishasha sector — famous for its tree-climbing lions

  • Optional crater lakes exploration and cultural community visit

  • Sundowner photography session on the Kazinga Channel

What to expect: A water-side wildlife parade; prepare to be spoiled for animal variety.

Tip: Telephoto lens recommended; hippos have surprisingly expressive faces.

Accommodation: Same as Day 3

Day 5: Lake Mburo National Park — Walking Safari & Return to Entebbe

Although it isn’t a classic Big Five destination (elephants and rhinos are absent, and lions and leopards are scarce), Lake Mburo National Park hosts a varied selection of African wildlife, including several iconic species not found elsewhere in western Uganda. The park’s acacia-swathed slopes and valleys are home to giraffe, zebra, buffalo, impala, waterbuck, bushbuck, and various other grazers and browsers. Hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds thrive in an extensive network of lakes and other wetlands.

Start your morning with a walking safari in Lake Mburo National Park — Uganda’s only national park where you can leave the vehicle behind and walk among zebras, giraffes, and antelope under the guidance of an armed ranger. It is the “Walking Safari Capital” of Uganda, offering a completely different perspective from vehicle-based game drives.

After the walking safari and breakfast, transfer to Entebbe with a lunch stop en route. Drop-off at Entebbe International Airport or your hotel.

What to expect: Time to reflect, sort photos, and start planning your next trip back.

Tip: Leave space in luggage for last-minute souvenirs and the occasional rock of appreciation.

Best Time to Go on This Uganda Safari

The best time for game drives and boat cruises in Uganda is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. These months offer firmer trails, clearer views, and better wildlife spotting. Animals congregate around water sources, making game viewing excellent from both vehicle and boat.

The low seasons of April, May, and November bring lower lodge rates and thinner crowds, though trails can be muddy and some roads may be challenging. Uganda’s low-season gorilla permits drop to $600, and chimpanzee permits to $200, making it an attractive time for primate enthusiasts to extend their safari.

Pro tip: If your travel dates are flexible, booking a low-season safari can save you significantly on lodge rates across all parks.
